In a Tonglen practice we receive the pain and suffering of others with our inhale and we extend to them healing thoughts and energy with our exhale. We’re living in fragmented times. I truly believe that community and connection are the path through this. According to the American Psychiatric Association, as many as 50% of adults feel loneliness on a weekly basis. Contrary to what some might believe, social media exacerbates this rather than helps it.

This photo is was taken this morning from my newest community, an exercise class a friend invited me to join. In addition to a 45 minute workout we talked about one person’s recent experience moving his elderly mother into assisted living; we talked about another person’s new job; and we just informally checked in one another.

Not feeling part of a community? Here’s a quick list of suggestions:

Volunteer for an organization that supports a cause important to you. One immediate benefit of this is connection to like-minded people with regard to that issue.

Make a stronger effort to “be a good neighbor.” In today’s world of television and social media, many people don’t even know their neighbors!

Go to the local public library . Most libraries offer a strong variety of programs and just this week I noticed that my local library was actually hosting an event aimed at helping people meet new people.

Join an exercise class. Obviously, this one is my favorite! But seriously, an exercise class, regular yoga class, running club, golf group, etc, is a wonderful way to become part of a community.

I love this video and it’s only in part due to being in Montenegro by the Adriatic Sea. At first glance it’s just a (very😅) sped up sequence. But looking more closely:

- Props! Towels, blocks, SHOES
- Modifications! Several yogis remain standing in order to protect injuries and/or knee replacements while others have their knee down on the mat
- and yet: EVERYONE is completing the sequence, nearly in sync, in accordance with their abilities and body types.

One size does NOT fit all.
Props and modifications ARE appropriate.
“Full expression of the pose” means different things for different bodies.
A leg that is as straight as your body can place it is straight, regardless of what it looks like to someone else.

See if you can sit still and just focus on the water coming in and moving out. Over time, this type of focus, for example upon our inhales and exhales, can improve our attention span, make us less reactive, and help us relax. Even one minute! #meditation #oneminutemeditation #inhaleexhale #yoga

Our closing circle last night included laughter, hugs, and plenty of joyful tears. Our community’s #hellyeah spirit is stronger than ever.

Today I was blown away to read a Substack article by my friend, Sara, describing her first time in one of my yoga classes. Her article, linked in my bio, is about the various ways that we feel the need to perform, and she was prompted to write the article because she was struck by the fact that the class was NOT performative. Read the article!

As Sara writes, “We perform in so many places—at work, on social media, with friends, even in yoga studios. And when adversity shows up—illness, loss, heartbreak—the performance can get even heavier. ….Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying we should not perform at all. It’s finding the balance.
Start by asking yourself: do you think you perform more than you don’t? I can tell you that I definitely perform more than I don’t.
So starting there, I then want to think about places I could perform less. Be my honest self, which honors who I am, and remind myself that my feelings and emotions are worthy, and just as important, if not more important, than the emotions of others.”

I’m so honored that my yoga class struck her that way, but more importantly I think she has a valuable message for us.

Anger, or aversion, is one of the 5 klesas, or causes of suffering, described in the yoga sutras. When we are angry, we suffer. The Buddha said that we get angry when we don’t get what we want. If anger makes us suffer, it seems that removing that anger would be good for us. I’m trying to be intentional about a morning routine. I’m super focused on not looking at my cell phone until I’ve sat in silence for at least 15 minutes. But I’ve also been trying to do 5 half sun salutations first. Feels amazing to gently move that spine and stretch a little. Our pets even know to do this!

“I can’t touch my toes” or “my legs won’t straighten” are common refrains. That’s ok!! You can protect your back as much as necessary by bending your legs and no matter what, you’ll feel the stretch in the back of those legs. Give it a try!

So many of us scroll our phones as a default activity. Breaking this habit is more easily said than done, but I definitely believe there are specific small bits of time where we can choose something different, namely when we are “just waiting” and when we first get up in the morning. So many of us scroll our phones as a default activity. Breaking this habit is more easily said than done, but I definitely believe there are specific small bits of time where we can choose something different, namely when we are “just waiting” and when we first get up in the morning. Yogasutra 2.11: “Meditation can overcome (these) afflicted activities.” What are the afflicted activities? Fear, anger, aversion, attachment, etc.

A regular practice, even just a few minutes, can help us overcome those “afflictions.” It doesn’t mean we are aren’t human being with human emotions or foibles; it does mean that we can help ourselves. Legs up the wall is an awesome restorative yoga pose. You can also do it without the wall: just raise your legs overhead and support them by holding the backs of your thighs. You can truly stay here as long as you want. Try it! It’s great for calming down, alleviating stress, and cooling down. #meditation #oneminutemeditation #yoga #legsupthewall
