Should I Weigh In On This?
I was walking yesterday afternoon and for some reason it occurred to me that it has been six months since my last post. While I have not had a consistent cadence for these, and have (obviously) not put pressure on myself to stick to any schedule, I do find this interesting. I am reminded of one of my favorite things I have seen on the internet: the "should I weigh in on this? flowchart."
When I write these, something specific has inspired me to do so. Absent that inspiration, I just don't have anything to say. (Or, rather, plenty to say but also choosing to keep that to myself. And to be clear, sometimes it is very important to “speak up”). So, full disclosure, I started this email yesterday afternoon but I just deleted the entire (looong😅) thing. And, of course, the universe provided that inspiration to me this morning in the form of an Instagram post by another yoga teacher: "(I am) too much of a yogi to speak of universal love while only loving those who think like me."
What a wonderful message for our times. A frequent theme for me is my belief that many aspects of social media, cable news, and political podcasts serve the primary purpose of dividing us. It is therefore up to us, as individual human beings, to rise above that and build community and connections.
For a few years I have been in the daily habit of practicing the loving kindness meditation. Of course there are variations of this, but one of them goes:
May all beings be happy.
May all beings be healthy.
May all beings be safe.
May all beings be at ease.
"All beings" means, well, ALL beings. Consistent practice of this has helped me when I am not my “best self,” perhaps irritated or annoyed, or when I am struggling to be patient with someone else. Consistency has also reinforced my views on how people are treated.
I do a daily live 5 minute version of this most weekdays at 7AM EST on Instagram. And if you are intrigued about taking this a little bit deeper, I host a weekly 15 minute version on Thursdays at 8AM EST. Link here. The scientifically documented benefits of meditation are numerous, and additional benefits can be derived from practicing with a group. Join us!

Shifting gears in a major way, I am writing this while at the airport, headed on a yoga retreat to the Galapagos Islands. This is our 4th and final trip of 2026, and what a year it has been! This has been an amazing way to build community and connections, as well as to visit incredible places. We still have room in 2 of our trips for 2027. Let’s stay safe; stay healthy; and stay kind to all of the people we encounter.
Thanks for reading!!
