I’ve recently posted some suggestions for what to do while you’re “just waiting” instead of scrolling your phone. It’s a great time to try a several minute breathing meditation. It’s also a great time to catch up on some reading! Check out @housecallsthepodcast for their 10-minutes-a-day reading challenge. Today I was blown away to read a Substack article by my friend, Sara, describing her first time in one of my yoga classes. Her article, linked in my bio, is about the various ways that we feel the need to perform, and she was prompted to write the article because she was struck by the fact that the class was NOT performative. Read the article!

As Sara writes, “We perform in so many places—at work, on social media, with friends, even in yoga studios. And when adversity shows up—illness, loss, heartbreak—the performance can get even heavier. ….Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying we should not perform at all. It’s finding the balance.
Start by asking yourself: do you think you perform more than you don’t? I can tell you that I definitely perform more than I don’t.
So starting there, I then want to think about places I could perform less. Be my honest self, which honors who I am, and remind myself that my feelings and emotions are worthy, and just as important, if not more important, than the emotions of others.”

I’m so honored that my yoga class struck her that way, but more importantly I think she has a valuable message for us.

Anger, or aversion, is one of the 5 klesas, or causes of suffering, described in the yoga sutras. When we are angry, we suffer. The Buddha said that we get angry when we don’t get what we want. If anger makes us suffer, it seems that removing that anger would be good for us. While on this walk yesterday I was able to notice what was happening, laugh at myself a little bit, and then bring myself back into the present moment. Two excellent methods for bringing us back into the present moment are counting our breaths and a body scan. We’re human! All of these things that happen with us are also experienced by others. How we then respond to those emotions is the key. Breaking this habit is more easily said than done, but I definitely believe there are specific small bits of time where we can choose something different, namely when we are “just waiting” and when we first get up in the morning. Closing your eyes and counting your breaths is a nice option; so is a body scan. The latter is especially good in the doctor’s office waiting room. Yogasutra 2.11: “Meditation can overcome (these) afflicted activities.” What are the afflicted activities? Fear, anger, aversion, attachment, etc.

Legs up the wall is an awesome restorative yoga pose. You can also do it without the wall: just raise your legs overhead and support them by holding the backs of your thighs. The practice of Tonglen involves the receiving of others’ suffering and the giving of our healing energy. This can be practiced with regard to specific people who are close to you or with regard to people who are suffering whom you do not actually know. Practicing this can help lead us to a greater sense of compassion. #meditation #oneminutemeditation #lovingkindness #compassion #tonglen

If we do this (or even try this!) we can become more compassionate and accepting with ourselves, hopefully then developing greater well-being:
Recognize: Identify the emotion or thought that is arising. This could be sadness, anger, fear, or any other feeling.
Allow: Allow the experience to be present without trying to push it away or change it. This means accepting the emotion as it is, without judgment, and allowing it to exist without resistance.
Investigate: Explore the emotion with curiosity, asking questions like: “Where do I feel this in my body?”
Nurture: Be kind to yourself! We’re human!

There’s also great benefit simply in the pause that this provides. Pausing before reacting. ✌🏼#meditation #oneminutemeditation #lovingkindness #compassion #yoga #presentmoment

I am SO grateful for this journey and the support I have had along the way. For five years I have been seeking the “next step” in this, meanwhile taking one step at a time, and I have landed on that with this venture. And like most things, there are different ways to do this. You’ve likely heard the word “mantra” before. It’s Sanskrit for “mind (manas) “tool” (tra), so it’s a tool we can utilize as a point of focus. A common mantra you’ve likely heard or seen is “Om.”

Utilizing a mantra while focusing on the breath is a “noting technique” as is counting the breaths.

“So Hum” (or Sohum) means “I am that,” and can serve to remind us that all of us are interconnected.

We start with ourselves, because this strengthens us, and then we move to people important to us. Then we can move towards difficult people and, finally, ALL beings. I try to do this every day and it’s powerful! And effective.
